About
Hi, I'm David Morales. Founder of Blue Tortilla Games and designer of The Last Bokis.I am a cancer biologist but I spend most of my time daydreaming about creating games full-time. This is my attempt at achieving that!I am also a proud father of 2 SETS OF TWINS! (2 girls and 2 boys). It is my absolute dream to play and design games with my children in the future.
Design Philosophy
Board games are a social catalyst above all else. The most compelling games are those where mechanics and theme are inseparable, brought to life through beautiful, tactile components that elevate the entire experience. We aim to create experiences that keep players genuinely invested and spark the kind of interactions that forge lasting memories around the table.
Why Blue Tortilla Games?
I was born in Mexico City and lived there most of my life.Mexicans are proud of a lot of things, but perhaps above all, we are proud of our cuisine. The cornerstone of mexican cuisine is the corn tortilla, which holds everything together. When you first come to Mexico, you might be surprised by the rough textures, uneven shapes, and diverse colors of tortillas. However, it is the blue corn tortilla that rises above the rest. It is the perfect mix of flavour, texture, and beauty. So, let's have a Blue Tortilla Game, shall we?

The Last Bokis
Overview
You are one of The Last Bokis, an ancient species seeking refuge on Earth after the collapse of your home planet.Your goal is to evolve the skills necessary to thrive on Earth and sprout a new generation of Bokis.Grow wisely.Sprout new life.Save your species.
Dynamic Scoring
The Last Bokis is a highly interactive game where players collectively determine the value of skill cards.
Place or move stones on a shared board to increase the value of a skill.Strategic planning and incisive tactical play will grant you an advantage.
Evolve your Skills
Throughout the game, you will acquire increasingly powerful skill cards with unique abilities.Turn your cards face-down to evolve their skill and score.Evolved cards can't be stolen, but you lose access to their abilities. The dance between keeping the cards on your board and evolving them to score creates a satisfying strategic puzzle.

Compelling Decisions
The Bokis must learn skills from 3 distinct domains to thrive on their new planet. The Adapt domain grants you data to upgrade your player board. The Evade domain increases your ability to camouflage among humans, making you stealthier in missions. The Survive domain recovers your energy to prepare for any encounter.Find the right balance between domain mastery and diversification.
Memorable Encounters
Meeting another Boki on the board leads to an encounter. These spark tense moments of negotiation and, well, betrayal.
Simultaneously reveal your action token and go on cooperative missions for shared rewards, or use your energy and snacks to pluck your opponent's flowers, cards, and resources.
From Draft to Reality
I had the absolute pleasure to work with Ella (@ohwelladays) to bring The Last Bokis to life.We workshopped a few concepts on how we wanted the Bokis to look, what size they would be, what settings would be interesting to put them in, etc.It was truly wonderful to see Ella's ability to transform a discussion with a few pointers into beautiful works of art!
Prototyping, Playtesting, Tweaking
I had been thinking about the core of the game for a long time and would routinely write some ideas down on my phone while at work or running an errand. In my head, the game worked perfectly and all the mechanisms integrated seamlessly into one finished product. It was only when the first playtest came that I saw just how broken, unplayable, and tedious my game was. Too much upkeep, too many unnecessary rules, and not enough fun. Needless to say, we didn't finish the session and decided to play just have a few drinks to round-up the night. However, there were some kernels of truly interesting gameplay already present in that first prototype. The dynamic scoring model, didn't quite work, but it was interesting nonetheless. The encounters changed dramatically, but players seemed to enjoy the bluffing and negotiation. It gave me an interesting reasurrance that I was on the right path. My game was broken, but I knew it was worth fixing. After a while, the game was fun, and much less broken. Games were actually being started and finished with people talking about different strategies and potential tweaks after the session. So I decided to enter the Nestifyz prototype competition. The winner would go to Essen to showcase their prototype on a booth. The Last Bokis was chosen by a panel of experts and by the people as the champion. So, I booked a Flixbus to Essen and did back to back 14-hour bus rides to go present and be back with my family.Later, I found The Last Bokis also won a prototype competition Nestifyz hosted at Essen Spiel 2025.
With this added confidence boost, I kept iterating. Prototyping, Playtesting, and Tweaking.
